1) Determine the water source! Some floods occur because of broken pipes, some occur due to rain, and some occur due to clogs. Some flood water, therefore, is clean and safe, and some flood water is contaminated and dirty. Be sure to stay away from sewage and other contaminated water, or water that is potentially electrified.

2) After assessing the safety of the water, stop the water source, if possible. Never attempt to stop a water source at the expense of safety!

3) Elevate/remove important and/or valuable documents and objects that are easily accessible. Always be careful with regard to electronics, and never compromise your safety.

4) Pin up curtains and drapes to avoid the formation of water rings.

5) If possible, turn on air conditioners or heaters to increase air circulation.
